You’ve Got Mail

It is pretty exciting when you go to your bobi mailbox and find out you have more than just bills & periodicals stuffed in there, right? As much as I love my monthly magazine subscriptions1, there is nothing that can make my day more than an unexpected letter or card with my name & address handwritten on the front. Of course, in this era of Internet and quick communication in general, it’s few and far between that you receive something unexpected in the mail from a love one. However, you can’t not enjoy a holiday or birthday card from a parent or grandparent :)

Living in an apartment, all mailboxes are the same size and style, offering nothing as far as personalization or personality go, and often times they aren’t big enough for most packages you might expect to receive. When I have my own home, I’ve found there are a variety of traditional and contemporary mailboxes to choose from. Not to mention, all the different types of mailboxes in addition to styles, like bobi mailboxes. Who knew, right? I think doing any sort of decent research for anything, even the minor, little things, can reveal some crazy amount of results.

What are some things you’d love to have in your home, especially your dream home?

  1. I have 3; Marie Claire, Redbook and Good Housekeeping.

Mailboxes, Etc.

The husband and I are pretty lazy when it comes to getting our mail. When we finally decide to retrieve our mail from our individual slot in our apartment building’s commercial mailboxes, we have some issues trying to pry out everything, especially when it comes to several magazines and all the junk mail that the postal carrier has been having to shove in there. It’s not a good thing, either, when it comes to time sensitive items, like bills or invitations we might get! Luckily we do most of our billing through the internet and phone. I know some people like having a paper trail and record of everything, but for me, unless it’s SUPER important, a simple confirmation code and not having to worry about mailing in checks on time is more my thing.

I’ve noticed that commercial mailboxes tend to fall short on visual appeal and size, but considering their purpose, something streamlined and uniform works best. With so many tenants living in one apartment building alone (let alone how many there might be in one complex with several buildings!), they need to be smaller. It just sucks when you expect a large enough package and you don’t know who’s delivering it whether you’ll get the “tried to deliver” note, they’ll come up and leave it by your door OR leave it with the office. Any of which has their own set of pitfalls and inconveniences.

What I can’t wait for is when the husband and I find that one house we fall in love with and buy, is trying to choose between all the snazzy and fancy residential mailboxes available these days. I’m partially drawn to the old-fashioned looking ones, but I couldn’t tell you if I’d go for the curb-side box or one that attaches to the wall near the front door. Would I put our last name on it, or just leave it with our house number? What about the street name WITH the house number? Do I want it to lock? Will I want a specific spot for a newspaper and those unaddressed coupon periodicals? I guess I’ll make those decisions when it comes time to. :P

When it comes to owning your own place, what are the little things you’re excited about doing? Are there any “strange” or “quirky” items you’ll HAVE to have as part of your own home?
