When I was younger, I was very into the girl games marketed towards my age group1. It all started with Barbies, Polly Pocket and dress-up. I admit, my playing around involved a lot of what one might consider girly. Playing house, acting like a mom and wanting to be older so I could fill out dresses, wear heels like my mom, and just be sexy like I always thought older women were.
Other girl games I loved were Pretty Pretty Princess and Girl Talk. my favorite item in Pretty Pretty Princess were the clip-on earrings since I’d had my previously pierced ears close up due to an infection in the holes, so I couldn’t wear normal earrings. I was too afraid of the pain to have my ears re-pierced until I was a senior in high school. I would wear the clip-on & screw-on earrings I inherited from my great grandmother, but they’d hurt my lobes more often than not.
I wanted so badly to be an adult, if at least physically, that sometimes I got a little too mature with my girl games. I used to think I was the only one, but I know that I wasn’t
Unfortunately, the reality isn’t nearly as fun or as sexy as I had imagined it might be growing up. There are some of the perks I imagined, but when you’re younger, you never really comprehend just how much responsibility goes along with the fun. I do hope that young girls don’t try to grow up too quickly, even though it’s becoming more and more difficult to prevent and enjoy the fun games that simply allude to the future, instead of giving you a full on preview or experience too soon.
- And older, of course! ↩
