December, Oh December

Thanksgiving: Part Deux

I’m overdue for the Thanksgiving post. What can I say? I just haven’t felt like posting. I’m lazy. I would’ve actually posted last night, but my host decided to go down for who knows what reason. So here we go…

I spent the long weekend up in Los Angeles with my friends and family. I actually got to celebrate Thanksgiving two days in a row since we had a small gathering for dinner on Thursday with just my mom, dad and grandma. Following that on Friday was the big gathering at my uncle-in-law’s house1 which included at least 30 immediate & extended family members. The spread was delicious in both cases and I have to admit, my dad’s smoked turkey beat out Kevin’s2. It was SO dang juicy! Apparently my parents brined it the day prior.

For the small dinner, my mom did a lot for just us four people. Mashed potatoes3, sweet potatoes, salad, green bean casserole, stuffing, rolls, cranberry sauce and the turkey. Everything was pretty much from scratch except for the can of cranberry sauce, rolls and technically my dad took care of the turkey as it smoked. I’m surprised I didn’t go for seconds!

I had taken the train from San Diego after 3 hours of sleep and waking up at 5:45 in the morning. I didn’t nap at any point during the day, until after dinner. It was served around 3pm and I was pretty much passed out on the couch by 3:45pm, complete with drool. After not seeing my grandma for a while, I felt bad for not actually spending more time with her before my dad took her home. I was still passed out by the time I should’ve driven her. *sleep* Woops *lazy*

Saturday was spent with my friends, playing our board games, eating and just talking. We also drew names for our annual secret santa :) I’m really going to have to concentrate to get just the right thing for the person I drew… While, in the mean time, I’ve been adding stuff to my Elfster wishlist like crazy. I posted it to my Facebook and Twitter just for the record, not that I’m expecting anything from anybody. FOR REAL! I’ve actually had a tough time trying to figure out what I actually want, if someone were to ask. This has helped a little. Just finding random things online and adding them to the list has been fun.

If you hadn’t seen or heard, I chopped my hair off! I’m very happy with it! I took in a picture of Dianna Agron (Quinn from Glee) as a guideline for how I wanted it done. The stylist was very good and I’m very pleased that it came out so well, especially since I wanted something pretty specific. Huzzah! I just have to remember to use less shampoo & conditioner in the shower and practice different style techniques with it :)

  3. Which I made after she boiled them, for the first time ever!

Hot, Like Lava

Everything is settled with the car, registration & tags, and the husband’s license. I’m also settled into the recliner in the loft at Angel‘s house, sitting in computer geek silence with Kristen in Arizona. I’ve officially met all 7 of the cats, 3 dogs and 2 ferrets! It’s my first encounter with ferrets and I have to say, they’re quite enjoyable and cute! I did not expect their fur to be so course, though. I haven’t experienced the stink that they apparently develop? That would be thanks to Angel cleaning their cage before I arrived, as I’m staying in their room for the duration of my stay here heh.

I have to say, it is amazingly quiet in this town. Also, since it’s an hour outside of Phoenix, there’s very little light pollution as well. It kind of reminds me of my time spent living in South Carolina. There was a time while the husband and I were still in the military when he was trying to get orders to Arizona. It’d be the closest we could get to home as far as Air Force bases are concerned, without living in the middle of nowhere in central or northern California, or smack dab in the middle of Los Angeles. Not to mention, it’d be a hell of a lot cheaper! I also hear some cool stories about the storms and weather they get out here in Arizona

Robby made steaks marinated in the Sauce of Awesome Loser. Angel & Robby decided to rename the Mika-safe version of this sauce to that, since the Sauce of Awesome is actually quite spicy and my mouth just can’t handle much spice, if any. I kind of resent that to some people *ahem* spice = flavor. Just because my diet happens to lack things on the more calienté end of the spectrum doesn’t mean I eat bland food. I can’t stand flavorless food! I love seasoning and using flavors… I just have a low tolerance to capsaicin in my food. I voted to rename it to at least Sauce of Meh, but my requests were ignored heh.

I finally saw the Rocky Horror episode of Glee, with Kristen. I don’t understand why so many people are crying foul and whining that they killed it. Was it because it wasn’t a direct interpretation? Did they add a little too much of their own thing? Seriously? STFU people. They had fun with it and I enjoyed it for what it was. It wasn’t full of win, but I loved seeing their interpretation of the songs, costumes and characters. Having fun with Rocky Horror is what matters! Go throw some rice or squirt yourself with some water, why don’tcha?

I Want Your Vertigo Shtick

I’m sitting in my recliner, watching a bunch of Lady Gaga music videos on Fuse. There doesn’t seem to be much else on that appeals to me. I had recorded the last hour or so of Happy Feet on the DVR but it apparently only wanted to record a random chunk of 10 minutes towards the beginning of the movie (I didn’t change the channel so it technically should’ve recorded the whole thing through the end). That pissed me off.

It’s father’s day and I’m so thankful and lucky to have the dad I have. He’s amazing. My cousin brought tears to my eyes last night, though, mentioning our grandfather who passed away in October two years ago. I miss him a LOT.

Lately I’ve been really wanting to take advantage of the work out room next to the pool in my apartment complex. At least, I’d love to walk on the treadmill or something for an hour a day to get started. I want to get rid of this stomach and smooth things out.

You know what I hate? When watching TV or doing anything else and it inspires a craving. Watching a random reality show, they were picking from a large platter of nachos and GOD I wanted them immediately. It’s easy to trigger a craving in me when I’m hungry, too. The closest thing I could do related to nachos is heat up some refried beans and maybe make a quesadilla with cheddar cheese and some leftover Taco Bell sauce. I’m not sure if I want to go through the effort though lol.

Tomorrow I’ll be going to my company’s picnic for our region’s associates. It’s about two hours away and I’m eager to enjoy all the free food (gosh, I’m sound like such a glutton!) and see my BFF and hopefully some of my old coworkers. The husband’s coming with – hopefully he enjoys himself at least a little bit.

Get Out of Town

I’ve been in a funk lately. Other than work and home, there hasn’t been much else going on in my life. I’m so eager for my summer to get started!

It starts with my BFF’s baby shower on Sunday. I’ll probably drive into L.A. on Saturday night and stay at my parents’. Following that will be my company’s family picnic, which is held at a water park opened solely for the employees. Not to mention, all the free food and such. Next is my husband’s birthday and we’ll be celebrating with my cousin taking us to the Dodgers vs. Yankees game! A few days later I’ll be heading off to the Sierras with my parents and brother over the 4th of July weekend and for the rest of the week.

I need something different than just sitting here. I have yet to develop any friendships here so there’s not much getting out. The husband’s been out quite a bit more than I have and it’s starting to get to me. It’s been a little difficult getting in with my coworkers since most of them have known each other longer either from school or some are even related. It’s tough to break into that as the (somewhat) new girl.

The most productive thing I’ve done all day is finish the last season of Law & Order: SVU. I then watched Wedding Daze, Underworld: Rise of the Lycans and now I’m working on Cashmere Mafia. You know, that short-lived series with 4 strong female leads trying to survive on the coattails of Sex & the City? All 7 episodes! *lol*

Hmmm. I’d love something warm and chocolaty right now. Pretty darn badly. A nice warm chocolate chip cookie! The only thing I can bake in the apartment are scones. I don’t know if I want scones… would it even be okay to start baking them now? 11:15pm? Hmm…
