A Gaslamp Experience

Posted in Life on April 12th, 2011 by Mika – 1 Comment

Dodgers @ San Diego This weekend was quite crazy. It started Friday night when I had to pick up a schwasted husband from the Gaslamp area of Downtown San Diego after he went to a work-organized event at Petco Park to watch the Dodgers play the Padres. It was a on & off rainy evening, so the rest of the game after the top of the 9th was rained out, but that didn’t keep anyone from going down the blocks in their clubbing finest and doing what people do in downtown areas on a Friday night. It was amusing as I rolled along, seeing the girls in their butt-long tube dressed and 5″ heels walking from club to club in 45°F and wet weather. I felt a strange mix of smug and bad about myself. I eventually got the boy home and didn’t end up going to bed myself until about 0330 in the morning. That sucked. Why?

I had a work meeting at 8am. We have one about once a period and it’s always on a Saturday morning at 8am. We were gypped donuts this time around, though. Talk about disappointing! It lasted about an hour and when I got home, I was faced with whether I was going to return to bed or not. I decided to stay up, get myself some Starbucks and ended up getting some McDonald’s breakfast as well, since that’s what the still-drunk husband requested. After getting back from that errand, I gave my dad a call to see what he and my mom were up to. They had come down from LA on the Amtrak and were staying at the Marriott across the street from Petco Park to see the game on Saturday. I love my parents so I was excited to meet up with them. Which we did, once I coaxed the husband out of his semi-drunk grumpiness.

Let the 14-hours of drinking commence!

It starts with two bottles of wine split between my parents and me at lunch. I was slow on drinking, however, so I had maybe a glass and a half. This is followed by splitting a bottle of wine with my mom at a cigar shop. Next is a round of cocktails at the club/bar that sits on top of the Marriott and after this is when my parents leave our company to head to the game inside the baseball park. The husband and I have another round of drinks followed by a sudden decision to try and get a hotel room nearby for a (relatively) cheap rate. We do, so we make our way to the Marriott connected to the convention center1 and we check in, take some time to enjoy the room and view, and freshen up. To get back to the Gaslamp, we take a pedicab2, which are almost as prevalent as regular cabs are in the area. The rest of the night shall be in bullet format…

  • Dinner and one round at a Thai restaurant.
  • Three or four rounds at the Marble Room.
  • Go back to my parents’ room to give them back their key card, get sunglasses my dad had brought for me, the baseball tickets for Sunday and say goodnight.
  • Back to Marble Room for another round.
  • One or two rounds at Nicki Rotten’s.
  • Rockin Baja for one round.
  • Two or three rounds at Blarney Stone.
  • Stumble back to hotel and pass the eff out around 0220am.

Yeah. I think I’ve had my official Gaslamp pubcrawl experience now. When we said goodnight to my parents, we made plans to meet up with them for breakfast around 0930 before they headed back to LA on the train around noon. I managed to get and make my way to their hotel, being only a few minutes late, but without the husband. How I did it and not him is beyond me since he’s the one who “doesn’t get hangovers”. The parents and I had breakfast at the ever-so-popular Broken Yolk. My dad had managed to get a table before the line outside really started to form, yay! I had no friggin idea what I was going to choose to eat. All I cared about was drinking down the two waters on my side of the table3. I managed to pick out an omelet with corned beef, tomatoes and cheddar cheese. I had one bite and decided I was better off eating my sourdough toast and fruit. The omelet’s in my fridge now, chillin’ *lol*.

After breakfast, I bid goodbye to my parents and made my drag back to our hotel where I met up with the husband outside the lobby, waiting for our car to be brought up by the valet. We were both hurting, understandably so. We made our way back to our apartment to get our Dodgers gear on, and just sit a while before the game.

How disappointing the game was! At least we won two out of the three game series, but I was mad I got to see the crappy game4. It was great finally being in Petco Park after having lived here for over a year now… It’s a great little baseball park, but it’s no Dodger Stadium. It was the first Military Appreciation Day for the Padres, so they wore their new digital camo jerseys, which aren’t nearly as ugly as the desert camo ones they wore last season. However, at the game I was actually feeling good and not hungover, which was great.

Once we got home after the game, I just kind of went comatose on the recliner, going in and out of consciousness with the TV on.

I think my friends on Facebook & Twitter are thankful my phone was dead all night on Saturday. I’m more disappointed that I didn’t have my camera along… Not that I’m sure I would’ve gotten any good pictures of anything, but maybe I could’ve coaxed a picture together with the husband out of him… Oh well. It was ultimately a great and fun weekend, but there won’t be any repeats in the near future. I can promise you that.

  1. As the one my parents were staying in didn’t have any rooms available for less than $300.
  2. Think a rickshaw with a person peddling a bike instead of walking.
  3. Table for four since the husband was expected.
  4. As in, the Dodgers didn’t win.

Let There Be Baklava!

Just for me, though. I love me some baklava. If you aren’t familiar with it and have never had it… I’m sorry :( You should pick some up at your local Greek bakery or Trader Joe’s, STAT!

I’ve found that I’m just not interested in becoming friends with random people I meet in bars. Nor am I too fond of hanging out with them unless I’m drunk as fuck, which… hasn’t been too often, nor recently.

How about that looming government shutdown? Talk about SUCK. There’s no embracing that 1! Thankfully there seems to be a temporary solution in place while they finally finalize a budget for this year. Stupid politics. I don’t follow it, like, ever. There’s just too much jargon and fluff and little of just getting to the damn point. Even knowing for sure what’s now going on in Congress is confusing because they can’t seem to say, in layman’s terms, what’s going on exactly. I think I get the gist of it, though. If I don’t, I’m sure there’ll be enough people flooding my Facebook wall with their gripes and politics soon enough. Most people I know are sleeping, though. I should be, too, since I’ve got an 8 AM work meeting.

On a positive note, my parents are in town and I’ll get to see them tomorrow. They took the train in and have tickets to tomorrow’s Dodgers @ Padres game. LET’S GO, DODGERS! ;) They were supposed to go to Sunday’s game, too, but they have a golf tournament volunteer party to go to, so the husband and I get all four tickets. We only managed to find one person to take one of the extra two… Oh well.

Ok… it’s off to bed with me. Or does it count as a nap? Hell if I know… Goodnight, Internet!

  1. My dad likes to tell me to “embrace the suck”, “don’t let the bastards get you down”, and “don’t do anything stupid”.

Sports & Music Play Together

I’ve been to my share of sporting events, predominantly baseball, with a couple of hockey games thrown in for good measure. I absolutely love going to baseball games and really, the only team I’ve seen at home are the Los Angeles Dodgers. It’s a little rough being a Dodger fan in San Diego since we’re the only team Padres fans can really hate on. We usually have other, bigger fish to fry like the San Francisco Giants.

Apparently it’s totally okay, however, for San Diegans to root for the Los Angeles Lakers come basketball season. I’d say they should be rooting for the Clippers since they originally were based out of San Diego, but I can’t fault them for not caring since few people care about the Clippers. Now that all L.A. basketball teams are playing out of the Staples Center, I wonder how many of my peers managed to get Great Western Forum tickets to see at least the Lakers play? I’m not sure how many would have since we were all around the age of starting high school. I know guys can be pretty into sports, but just how much at that age?

My mom, surprisingly, is a real big sports fan. She predominantly watches basketball and football. She’s originally from Madison, WI so she’s a huge Cheese Head. As in, she’s a huge Green Bay Packers fan. She gets a lot of crap for it, I’ve observed, but like a true fan, she doesn’t waver in her loyalty. One thing I’ve wondered is if she’s ever managed to score Lambeau Field tickets and see a home game of theirs. I know my dad recently got to go to St. Louis and see the Rams play (the team of which he’s a fan), so I wonder if my mom’s have the privilege of seeing her team play at home. That could make for a real awesome milestone gift for her, either 30th anniversary, retirement or one of her over-the-hill birthdays :D Maybe at some future point I’d be able to give that to her… She certainly deserves it.

There was actually a time when my sporting event attendance dwarfed to my attendance to music events, including having Hollywood Bowl tickets to Cher’s finale show to her Farewell Tour, the Righteous Brothers shortly before one of them passed away and Weird Al Yankovic. Would you believe that I’ve seen Cher in concert twice? I’ve been able to take a friend to each concert and they’re still my best friends from school, so I’ve joked that you’re not my best friend until you’ve seen Cher in concert with me ;)

Don’t Stop Believin’

Jonathan Broxton and George Sherrill are dead to me. They threw away a perfectly awesome game. I’ve never been so upset over sports… UGH.

My cousin took me, the husband, and my dad to the last of the Dodgers/Yankees series today for the husband’s birthday. We were up 6-2 at the top of the 9th and out comes Jonathan “Iron Man” Broxton who, believe it or not, I was excited to have come out and close the game. Them Yankees fans were going to STFU and exit Blue Heaven on Earth with their pinstripe tails between their legs.

Fffffffffffffffffffuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu!

That didn’t happen. Broxton allowed 4 runs alone, to tie up the score. Extra innings! Yay! Not… Out comes Sherrill (who?) and he allows the two losing runs to make all the awesomeness of that night just go away.

It was so damn disappointing. It’s bad enough the Dodgers have been on & off losing streaks for the past few weeks to increase the goading I get at work from all the Padres fans (FML), but to have Yankees fans get the last hoorah of the series and game this time around? FUCK.

You can bet that I’m not a fair-weather fan. I’m not into sports, but the Dodgers is the one team I grew up actually going to their games and baseball’s the only game I can really follow. That’s not to say I know anything and everything about the players and their stats and shit, but the game of baseball itself is awesome. Growing up, L.A. didn’t have a football team, and the Lakers weren’t as big of a deal (that I remember) then, and while I went to a couple Kings games, it was baseball that I was drawn to.

The atmosphere is just awesome. Going to Dodger Stadium, smelling the garlic fries cooking, having a Dodger Dog loaded with the works and now, spending $10 on a domestic beer, there’s nothing else like it. The cheering, camaraderie, singing… It’s one of my favorite things to do. Next to hearing Randy Newman’s “I Love L.A.” playing when we win ;)

Next time, Dodgers… Next time…

So These Are Your Work Friends!

I finally met some of my husband’s coworkers. Mostly, they were the younger crowd since the event we attended was for the younger crowd of the union he belongs to through work. It was a barbecue to have coworkers and their families meet and mingle. It was held at the house of one of the union guys and, well, I should say his place was a compound. It was about 45 minutes out from where we live, in the boonies and up in the mountains, but he had 3 horses, a two story house, a detached garage, a LONG ass driveway, a mini-orchard with lemon & orange trees and plenty of room for an add-on for his mother-in-law and a barn that he said he’s working on getting soon. *uhh* It was pretty amazing. Not to mention, the “man cave” that took up the lower level of his house. The sports memorabilia he has in there is beyond wow, even if he is a Giants/49ers fan ;)

After meeting a bunch of his coworkers, we left and joined a couple at a microbrewery right on the beach in Pacific Beach (PB for short). It actually didn’t take us long to find parking, surprisingly, AND we didn’t have to pay for it either! We partook in the all-you-can-eat crab legs while watching the Lakers kick some Boston ass.

Truth be told, I’m not a basketball fan. Other than the amusement I get out of the injuries sustained from overly-rough fouls and such, I’m just not that interested. I’d rather watch baseball. Speaking of which, the Dodgers kicked Cincinati ass, as well! 12 to nothing! Too bad San Diego won as well so we’re still half a game down from first place :/

The husband drank quite a bit of beer, and while he got loud and kind of obnoxious during the end of the Laker game, he was behaving. I had a lot of fun finally socializing out here in SD and meeting new people. I hope I’ll be able to hang out with some of them in the near future :)

Although, I will need to get some new friends of my own, as well! Hmm… Time for bed, now… I have work in the morning. I need to make some money after dinner tonight *wha*
