A Weekend Away

Posted in Family & Friends on November 20th, 2011 by Mika – 1 Comment

I spent my weekend up in LA with my family and had some time with my BFF Amber, her boyfriend & her sister. It was her sister’s 30th birthday so that was celebrated on Friday night. Saturday night was a going away dinner for my brother who’s going back to Texas to be retrained in a different job for the Air Force. He leaves the Sunday after Thanksgiving and will be gone for 2 months or so.

Unfortunately I learned on Saturday that a friend from Sardo’s passed away earlier this week from a massive heart attack. He was a very jovial man who was passionate about performing and was always so nice and snazzily dressed in a handsome vest and slacks. He was 49 years old. The last time I saw him was a few weeks ago when I’d gone up with Devin for his dad’s birthday. I’m glad I got to see him then. He’s already very missed. I just couldn’t believe it when I saw an update from another Sardo’s friend. I was definitely shocked. :(

I’m now back in San Diego and relaxing after driving home in rain and poor visibility. Thankfully there wasn’t too much traffic; I made it back in less than 3 hours. I did think I had a flat tire at one point, but everything was fine. It was apparently the freeway surface making that kind of sound/feeling. I’ve only had a flat tire occur once while driving, thankfully, so I’m not too attuned to what it sounds/feels like to have one. Thank God I have AAA now! Just in case, you know!

We’re Always With You®

There’s nothing like losing a nice, long entry to really make you RAGE. That’s what happened a few days ago. I was so angry! All because I was trying to insert images just I had a bunch of times before and somehow it all just… went away. Thanks bunches, WP, for not saving THAT draft where I needed it… Now to try and remember what all I had tried posting about.

We're Always With You®

Since the husband and I moved to a new apartment, my dad had asked on a couple of occasions if I had gotten my birthday thing in the mail. I told him I’d let him know if & when I got it. I assumed it would the normal birthday card with a check or cash in it. At one point, when getting the mail, I noticed a AAA mailer. I’d received them before, offering a membership with a temporary card and decal in case one decided to go ahead and sign up. I almost just tossed it to the side, however, I felt that there was more than just one card in the envelope. I opened it up and lo-behold there were two membership cards, one with my name on it and another with the husband’s name. I knew I hadn’t paid for a membership so I was kind of baffled as to how I now had one. Then I remembered the conversation(s) with my dad. He never mentioned exactly what they had sent me so it was a very pleasant birthday surprise!

My parents have been members forever, it seems. On top of the road-side assistance they provide, I know they also provide for some good discounts for lodging, transportation (Amtrak, for instance), and random things here and there. We’ve already used a perk of our membership! Apparently, they provide DMV-like services, and on the now! We’ve been over-due with our vehicle registration and they were able to give us tags after paying and giving them the information that the DMV needed and it didn’t take the God-knows how long it would have if we’d finally mailed in the check and proof of insurance.

Now I’m looking forward to my LA friends (Marinara) coming down and spending a weekend with us! I still have quite a bit of cleaning up to do in the living room, along with laundry1. I really wish we had our living room furniture out of storage… Bah.

Now for another edition of…

  1. We still haven’t rid ourselves of enough clothes yet!! Ugh.

It’s Mah Burfday!

I has a cupcake

I am officially in my mid-20s. The big ol’ two-five. How scary! Not really. It’s exciting. I love birthdays and I don’t mind a big getting older. Perhaps that’ll change when I’m inching towards new decades but right now, I’m just fine :) In the picture above, one of my coworkers brought in a giant cupcake with candles all lit and they all sang me happy birthday. I had just clocked out and it was midnight, so it was done pretty much on the dot. How awesome, right??

Things in the apartment are slow-going as far as unpacking goes. I’ve also missed two weeks of “laundry day” Thursdays. I’ll try catching up tomorrow. I need to get shit done soon, since my Marinara friends are coming down the 2nd weekend of September to visit!! I can’t wait! I miss them tons!!

Last night I went to my first drive-in movie in, oh, probably 15 years! My friend Jessica and I took her truck with the roomy cab and watched Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Captain America: The First Avenger. I don’t think I would have seen them otherwise. I’m just not a theater-goer much these days unless it’s something I seriously need to see in theaters. Say, oh, like the Harry Potter films haha. It was great times and the fact that you can talk to each other, smoke, drink, eat whatever all through out is a huge perk next to the $8 for two new releases! Hells yeah!

Tonight, the husband and I will be going out with a few friends to our first San Diego/Hillcrest gay bar! I’m definitely excited! Tomorrow is when I’m celebrating my birthday at our bar with karaoke and such. Sunday will be a day of recovery *lol*

The Forgot To Hit Post ETA: I never posted this and that’s kind of embarassing since it was kind of a time-sensitive thing. Everything went pretty well for going out to the gay bar until we discovered a ton of charges from one place hit our account all that day, which kept us from drinking as much as much as we wanted1. What was supposed to be my party for not only my non-coworkers, but my coworker friends as well. Nobody but 4 of my non-work friends showed up. Also, the karaoke machine had broken. And we were still broke. At various points I felt like tears would well up because I felt hurt and I was bummed! However, I felt stupid because I had had such a great time on my actual birthday. You win some, you lose some. It just made me so angry that people RSVPed yes and had told me they were excited for it, even allegedly getting the night off… and nothing. No advanced notice that they couldn’t come because of work or whatever else… Really?? That’s rude. Rude rude rude. *deep breath* I’m just glad that I did have friends who were there for me BOTH nights. They’re the best :) Like, for serious!

  1. After all, we had a DD and it WAS my birthday.

How 'Bout Them Dodgers?

The latest I’ve worked is 11pm with my current employer. I’ve never closed and the earliest I’ve worked is 7:30am or so… so technically I guess I’ve helped open, but not nearly as early as others. Sometimes after I’m off work at night, I’ll look at the clock a few hours later and realize we’re still open and my coworkers are still at it! I was actually let off a little under an hour early tonight. Early in the week are generally our least busy days.

You know what’s a very interesting series to watch? The History of Sex on the History channel. They go through the beginning of humanity through current times. There are so many interesting things that occurred sex-wise early on in history. It’s astounding, sometimes! The ignorance and surface prudishness of even early doctors, and the amazing hidden perversity experienced by both sexes is just… awesome to learn about!

The Dodgers are seriously disappointing me now. They’ve fallen into 3rd fricken place, behind the Giants, for our division. It’s causing me to lose any hope that they’ll perform well for us against the Yankees this Sunday! I want to see them kick Yankee butt! Just going to the game will be pretty awesome. It’s the gift my cousin is giving my husband for his birthday and myself plus my dad get to go along for the fun. I’m excited! I wanted to get him an authentic Lasorda jersey but they’re 1) expensive and 2) hard to find! Replicas are much easier to get your hands on, but I wanted the real thing… I eventually want to get myself a Piazza Dodgers jersey :) Those are even harder to find! There are plenty of Mets jerseys for him :P

Gosh, I need money. I need to win the lottery! It would help my chances if I actually played the lottery, huh? *lol*

Get Out of Town

I’ve been in a funk lately. Other than work and home, there hasn’t been much else going on in my life. I’m so eager for my summer to get started!

It starts with my BFF’s baby shower on Sunday. I’ll probably drive into L.A. on Saturday night and stay at my parents’. Following that will be my company’s family picnic, which is held at a water park opened solely for the employees. Not to mention, all the free food and such. Next is my husband’s birthday and we’ll be celebrating with my cousin taking us to the Dodgers vs. Yankees game! A few days later I’ll be heading off to the Sierras with my parents and brother over the 4th of July weekend and for the rest of the week.

I need something different than just sitting here. I have yet to develop any friendships here so there’s not much getting out. The husband’s been out quite a bit more than I have and it’s starting to get to me. It’s been a little difficult getting in with my coworkers since most of them have known each other longer either from school or some are even related. It’s tough to break into that as the (somewhat) new girl.

The most productive thing I’ve done all day is finish the last season of Law & Order: SVU. I then watched Wedding Daze, Underworld: Rise of the Lycans and now I’m working on Cashmere Mafia. You know, that short-lived series with 4 strong female leads trying to survive on the coattails of Sex & the City? All 7 episodes! *lol*

Hmmm. I’d love something warm and chocolaty right now. Pretty darn badly. A nice warm chocolate chip cookie! The only thing I can bake in the apartment are scones. I don’t know if I want scones… would it even be okay to start baking them now? 11:15pm? Hmm…
