And So It Goes

There’s nothing like tossing & turning, trying to get to sleep and all the while feeling that strange tickle in your lungs like you need to cough, constantly. I bought soups from Vons, some grapefruit juice and more cold medicine. Oh, and fabric softener because I ran out and need to do a bunch of laundry… eventually. I also need to wash a ton of dishes because I’ve been silently protesting cleaning the apartment. Who am I kidding? I just didn’t fucking feel like it. I still don’t, especially now.

I did manage a win in that Devin cleaned up all the junk mail that had accumulated on the floor and took out the trash. Since it’s a surprise whenever he cleans, I asked him about it and he said that the trash had started stinking, so he took it out. If there’s anything that’ll prompt me to clean, it’s stink. Unfortunately, I can’t smell anything lately, so I didn’t get that inspiration. I told him it was likely all the dirty dishes in the sink that stink, anyway, but I’m sure the trash didn’t help. He did say he’d wash half of the dishes if I did half.

I hate coughing.

Let There Be Lights!

Frosted Globe Lights

I finally have these suckers strung up on my patio! At our previous apartment, there was no way it was going to happen since the balcony was fairly small and it just didn’t make sense to, but with the size of our current ground-level patio, the extra lighting is definitely a plus. Not to mention I’ve wanted these kind of lights since I saw similar ones strung up in Olive Garden for the first time many years ago. While the fence around our patio is made of wood, I didn’t really want to hammer in nails. Thankfully my smart place did me some good and since there’s railing at the top, I came up with the brilliant plan of using zip ties! Secure but impermanent! Brilliant!

I bought a 100 pack of 14″ zip ties and came home to find out that they were just an inch or so too short! AUGH! Now I had to go back to Home Depot and get the huge ass 24″ ones that I contemplated on but figured they’d just be way too long. After driving a few blocks, it dawns on the me that I have more than enough zip ties currently to just link TWO together and that’s solves the problem! Doy! That saved me from spending another $5-$10 since the 24″ packs carried only 10, I believe. Huzzah!

That patio is definitely on its way to look presentable for friends when they come and visit. There are also two more chairs and a little metal table now. No more using an upside-down tub to put our ashtray and drinks on! We’re moving up, y’all!

Unfortunately the border stuff I bought to go along the base of the patio fence is too short to actually prevent Gunny from possibly squeezing through if she really wanted to. I’ll need to try and return those to Home Depot and get taller ones. I even bought a cheap-o rubber mallet to pound those bastards into the ground! Bah. Measure twice, cut once… Always. *sweat*

Fin!

Yesterday, the husband and I turned in the keys to our old apartment. No more obnoxious upstairs kids & piano! No more crappy all-in-one washer-dryer POS! To be honest, those were really the only complaints I had about the place. Oh, and it was kind of pricey. We have all of our shit from that apartment in the new one. Of course, I’ve only made progress as far as the kitchen and bathrooms are concerned since those are the only rooms that have a definite place to put things. We still don’t have any furniture out of storage. *sigh* Although, if we did have all of our stuff out of storage, I’m afraid there might be too much of it since we’ve gradually downgraded our living quarters in regards to square footage.

That’s not a bad thing. For two people and a cat, we honestly don’t need a lot of space. We shouldn’t need a lot of space. We managed to go through some clothes in order to throw away/donate and shrink our impossibly large collection of clothes. I did 5 loads of laundry last night! That would’ve been impossible at our old apartment, especially since all 5 loads are completely DRY! HALLELUJAH! That’s not counting the 2 loads I did the previous night when I washed our bedding and some towels.

I now leave you with a way for you to enjoy some new and free fonts that I’ve stumbled across and love. It’s also a way for me to document when I download new fonts :)

Getting My Move On

The husband and I are moving to a new apartment this weekend. We signed the lease, put down the deposit and got the keys tonight. There’s still quite a bit of packing and cleaning to do. Who am I kidding? All of it needs to be done. Our lease is up on the 4th, so we have until then to get our shit out of here and clean the apartment decently so we can get some, if not most, of our deposit back.

I’m quite pleased with our new apartment. There are wall units for the A/C instead of the centralized we have now, but that’s totally fine with me. We’re on the 1st floor, as you can see. Our patio is a good size, we don’t face a parking lot or major street and I’m praying that our upstairs neighbors don’t have two rambunctious kids and a piano…

I finally started sorting through the massiveness that is our clothes hoard. Donate, trash and everything else. The husband can deal with his clothes… I have enough of my own to take care of. I packed up the guest bathroom and cleaned the shower/tub. I have the two fabric shower curtains in the wash right now just to spruce them up for the new apartment.

The somewhat fortunate thing is most of our stuff is already in boxes and totes, but there’s no rhyme or reason to it. We still just didn’t have any place to put most of it since our larger furniture is still in storage. I’ll be fucked if I don’t get that shit in the next 6 months … I MUST! I’m definitely tired of living like a poor college bachelor. But hey, if you need a place to crash, we do have an extra bed! *rollseyes*

I definitely want to make this apartment HOMEY. I want to really enjoy it. I’ve prevented myself from doing too much because I keep expecting a move. I did put up some pictures and such at our current apartment, but it didn’t actually help in the making it “ours” part. Just some shit put up on the walls. I want some of my friend, Nessa‘s, photography to hang up on my walls. She takes beautiful photos. Her art is pretty great, too. WANT!!

Inspection Time

Our apartment complex left notice on all the tenants’ doors notifying them that they’d be out & about performing a “community inspection” of the place. I’ve never lived in an apartment before so I have no idea exactly what they’re looking at or for. From what Jenn told me, they’ll be on the look out for any pets that aren’t on the lease and I suppose other things that could be against the lease agreement. From my experience with inspections, they’re looking at cleanliness. Of course, that’s military inspections in regards to living quarters 1. It gives me a specific reason to clean up the place.

And clean I did. That statement makes it sound like I gave the entire apartment a good scrub-down, doesn’t it? That’s not what I did, but the main room and hallway to the washer/drying are now clear of the usual mine field of clothes. They’ve been put into bins, waiting to be washed. It’d be a huge fucking help if I had dressers to stick them in, but I also managed to put a waiting bin of clean clothes away.

I was having issues with the vacuum cleaner. It lost suction 2. After examining the hose, filter, bin… Nothing was proving evident to be preventing good suction. I finally found a good amount of back up at the back, where the hose connects to the body of vacuum. After digging around with my fingers and then needle-nose pliers. There were no less than three dryer sheets clogging it up. We haven’t purchased and or used dryer sheets since we’ve moved here and bought that vacuum. It returned to providing some good suction afterward.

Unfortunately, I didn’t manage cleaning of any other area of the apartment. The bathroom, bedrooms and the kitchen need a good cleaning… Oh well?

  1. Dorm rooms, specifically.
  2. Oh Dyson, where are you when one needs you?
